Peugeot will not make a 208 van

Date: Friday, January 20, 2012

Peugeot has announced that it will not make a commercial vehicle variant of the 208 passenger car when production of the 207 van comes to an end in the first quarter of 2012.

A spokesman for the brand said the 207 van was mainly sold in the UK and was originally introduced in 2007 to fill a gap in the line-up until the arrival of the Bipper the following year.

Sales of the 207 van peaked at 970 in 2008 but fell sharply away to 437 in 2009 and dwindled to about 250 last year. In contrast Peugeot sold 5000 Bippers in the UK in 2011.

“There is now no need for a 208 van,” the spokesman said, “the Bipper does a good job in the upright, compact van segment.”

The spokesman also suggested that producing a car-derived van did not fit with Peugeot’s aspiration to push its car range upmarket.
