VW unveils Pickup design concept

Date: Thursday, September 25, 2008

Hanover may be the home of Transporter production, but at this year's massive commercial vehicle show centre stage on the Volkswagen stand was taken by a design study of its new one tonne Pickup.

Due to begin rolling off the production line at the Pacheco plant in Argentina in autumn 2009 it is due to go on sale in the UK in 2010.

VW is keeping details of the engine and drivetrain close to its chest at the moment, but it will be available in the three standard configurations; Single, Extended and Double Cab. The latter has an overall length of 5,180mm, load length of 1,550mm and the ability to slide a Europallet between the wheel boxes.

The design concept was in the form of a four-wheel drive Search and Rescue vehicle and judging by the gearstick it has a six-speed 4Motion drivetrain including diff locks, but no low range. As the majority of sales are expected to be in South America, South Africa and Asia we suspect that production models will have a dual-range selectable 4x4 system fitted.
