Revamped Hilux packs more punch

Toyota has revamped the Hilux pick-up for 2010 giving it more punch, the ability to carry greater payloads and more options.

With 142hp on tap compared with a previous 118hp, the 2.5-litre D-4D diesel that sits at the heart of the range now offers 20 per cent more power. Top torque is up by 18Nm, to 343Nm at 2,000rpm.

Toyota has achieved these improvements by installing a new high-output turbocharger plus new, more precise, fuel injectors. They enhance throttle response as well as overall performance and the engine has been fitted with new pistons capable of coping with the extra horses. At 219g/km the CO2 emission figure remains unchanged.

Increases in Hilux’s gross vehicle weights have led to the rise in payload capacity, especially so far as Double Cab models are concerned. With the HL2 it’s up by 35kg while the HL3 gets a 25kg capacity boost.

Moving up the range, the 3.0-litre D-4D diesel is now available solely in the Invincible Double Cab. A change to Invincible’s options list sees the addition of satellite navigation with Bluetooth. It’s up for grabs as an option on the HL3 Double Cab too, and both the HL3 and Invincible can be specified with what Toyota describes as an Urban Pack. It includes a front guard, scuff plates and front and rear parking sensors.
