4 Shires Canters to the future

Date: Tuesday, May 18, 2010

A Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 3C15 3.5-tonne curtainsider has just become the first light truck to be acquired by Rugby-based builders’ merchant 4 Shires. The newcomer was bodied by Leicester-based Saunders of Stapleton.

4 Shires had previously used hired vehicles to make deliveries to customers within a 50-mile radius of its yard but decided it needed to acquire transport of its own.

“We’re a light-side merchant so volume rather than payload capacity is important for us,” says director Peter Middleton-Smith. “We didn’t want to go above 3.5 tonnes but our vehicle had to be able to carry lengths of plastic drainage pipe and roofing fascia as well as other materials.”

He was prompted to opt for a Canter 3.5-tonner when a supplier made a delivery to the firm’s premises in one. “I took one look at it and realised that it would be perfect for our business too,” he says.

Middleton-Smith is delighted with his acquisition, made through Coventry dealership Gerard Mann. “It’s going to be very productive, not least because we’ll soon be opening a branch in Daventry; our second depot.”
