EU eases emission targets for vans

Date: Tuesday, December 7, 2010

The European Parliament has watered down its proposed CO2 emission cuts targets for light commercial vehicles.

The Parliament has increased its 2020 target from 135g/km to 140g/km and reduced the maximum fines manufacturers would receive for failing to hit targets by 25 Euro to 95 Euro per gramme of CO2 above the limit.

It also extended the period for which van makers can receive supercredits for making higher emission vans in exchange for producing low CO2 vehicles from 2013 to 2014.

The changes follow a meeting of member states to discuss emission targets for vans but fall well short of their proposal to limit CO2 output of 155g/km by 2020.

The Parliament’s environment committee also stuck to its target for vans to reduce emissions to 175g/km by 2016 despite members calling for an extension to 2017.
