Sprinter runs away with massive fleet order

Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010

A whopping 700 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are being acquired by Sheffield-based Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions (BBUS).

Supplied through local dealer Northside Truck & Van, the majority are 313CDI 3.5 tonne vans. However the deal also includes a number of chassis cabs destined to be fitted with various types of body plus some 5.0-tonners. All the vehicles comply with the latest Euro 5 exhaust emission regulations.

BBUS has opted for passenger airbags — driver airbags are standard — plus seat belt warning alarms for drivers. BBUS is involved in a variety of different types of infrastructure and non-infrastructure work for the major utilities around the UK.

At the other end of the fleet scale, Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire-based Gilvar Lining has added a single 313CDI van to its 12-strong fleet. Gilvar favours the three-pointed star to the exclusion of everything else. It already runs seven Sprinters, three Vitos and a pair of Atego 7.5-tonners.

Applauding Sprinter for its reliability, the company marks out roads, car parks and playgrounds among other places. All its Mercedes are sourced through Derby dealer Mertrux.

Further south, a pair of Vitos — a 109CDI and a 115CDI Sport Dualiner — have joined Cool Heat Services of Woodham Ferrers in Essex. It installs and maintains air conditioning systems and refrigeration equipment for clients that include Brit-Vic and Tarmac Topblock and the Vitos are used by Cool Heat’s engineers.

The 109CDI serves as a mobile workshop and features a load area shelving system designed by Cool Heat itself. It carries tools, vacuum pumps, recovery units and refrigeration cylinders and may also be used to transport complete air conditioning systems in boxes.

The 150hp Dualiner is used by managing director, John Smith, as well as by his colleagues. Both the new Vitos were supplied through Thurrock dealer S & B Commercials and Cool Heat already runs another 109CDI which it says has given four years of trouble-free service.
