Vauxhall teams up with Fiat for new Combo

Date: Friday, December 3, 2010

Vauxhall has teamed up with Fiat to produce the successor to its best-selling Combo van.

The new model will be built on the same platform as Fiat’s Doblo (pictured) at the Italian brand’s plant in Tofas in Turkey.  Production will start in December 2011 and will run to 250,000 units a year – extending to a lifetime total of 1.3 million vans.

An initial supply of 6,000 vehicles will be built at the end of next year before the small van is rolled out to dealers across Europe at the beginning of 2012.

Vauxhall will retain the Combo name for the range, which will include derivatives such as cargo vans, passenger vehicles and chassis cabs. The Opel/Vauxhall design team in Russelheim, Germany cooperated with Fiat’s designers in Turin, Italy to develop the new Combo.

The current model, which went on sale in 2001, reaches the end of its lifecycle in the fourth quarter of 2011.

Despite being long in the tooth, Vauxhall said UK sales had held up well – reaching 9,232 in the year to 31 October.
