VW upbeat about Amarok

Date: Friday, December 3, 2010

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has now secured production slots for its forthcoming Amarok pick-up and expects to launch the vehicle in the UK in the first half of next year.

“We’re in a 100% better place than we were in September,” said the brand’s UK CV boss Simon Elliott, who added that prices and specifications should be confirmed in the next couple of weeks.

After a long period in the doldrums, pick-up sales leapt up by 25% in October and were down just 1.5% year-on-year in the first 10 months of the year at 16,526 units, according to the SMMT.

But with the market unpredictable, Elliott said VW would target market share rather than numbers and, unlike some of its competitors, would make protecting residual values a priority.

“We won’t discount,” Elliott said.

He predicted the Amarok would sell to owner drivers and independent businesses rather than large fleets and would not go into the rental market.
