First details of new Mitsubishi L200

Mitsubishi has revealed the first details of its new L200, which arrives in the UK this summer.

The Japanese firm has confirmed its Thailand-built pick-up will be launched in club cab and double cab forms, though the future of the single cab version, which is still in production but wasn't mentioned in the company's initial announcement about its new model, remains unclear.

Powered by 181hp and 154hp versions of a new 2.4-litre diesel engine, the new Thailand-built pick-up is claimed to offer efficiency gains of 17%, with a range low of 169g/kmfor the six-speed manual. A six-speed automatic with paddle-shift will also be offered, and Mitsubishi has confirmed double cab and club cab variants, the latter getting rear doors to improve rear access, rather than the seat-tilt of its predecessor.

Mitsubishi describes its new model as having a "surprisingly quieter interior" enabling conversation between front and rear passengers at motorway speeds, and the firma also claims a step-up in perceived cabin quality, improved seating and driving position.

The L200 gets seven airbags including a knee airbag for the driver, and enlarged body mounts and extended rear suspension leafs are claimed to provide a smoother vibration-reduced ride.

Pricing, specification and exact on-sale dates are still being discussed within the company, and will be confirmed nearer the summer.
