January van registrations increase by 21.4%, says SMMT

Date: Friday, February 6, 2015

Van registrations in January 2015 increased by 21.7% compared to January 2014, according to the latest Society of Motor Manufactures and Traders figures.

Just over 22,000 (22,049) vans were registered last month. The SMMT said the increased figures reflects increased levels of business confidence.

Vans weighing between 2.0-tonnes and 2.5-tonnes saw the biggest boost, with registrations increasing by 63% compared to January 2014’s figure of 2458 registrations. This could be down to the increased popularity of models such as the WhatVan? Award-winning Ford Transit Custom.

Pickup registrations also increased significantly – by 24.3% - compared to January 2014’s total. New models have been thin on the ground lately, but the recent winter weather could have had an effect on sales.

“There is demand for a range of efficient, well equipped models,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.
