IMAGE OF THE MONTH: Only Fools and Horses for courses

Date: Monday, July 31, 2017   |

A team competing at this year’s Red Bull Soapbox Race took inspiration from Del Boy and Rodney Trotter’s Reliant Regal Supervan III, featured in the TV comedy series Only Fools and Horses.

Held on the roads around Alexandra Palace, London, on 9 July, the annual event pits the homemade motorless vehicles against the clock.

All Red Bull soapbox vehicles must have the capacity for steering and braking, with teams being judged on both the time taken to complete the course as well as the creativity of their design and the showmanship of performances at the top of the hill. The course itself is littered with obstacles, such as chicanes and jumps, with accidents happening on a frequent basis.

Previous designs have included a piano, a giant baby carriage, a rodeo clown, a massive corn on the cob, a jail cell and the Golden Gate Bridge. The 2017 event was won by the ‘Brooklands Special’ team, while an entry fielded by the Aston Martin Works racing team finished second
