A van driver has been sacked after a video posted on Twitter by a cycling publication that showed the Renault Trafic forcing a cyclist off the road went viral.

Many people demanded Sussex Police investigate the driver, claiming the cyclist could have been seriously injured.

The van – which belongs to building company Vidette UK – attempted to overtake the cyclist before pushing the rider onto a grass verge.

Writing on Facebook, Ian Frazer, managing director of Vidette, said he could not “condone nor let this behaviour have any place within our company” and added that he “decided to make an example [of the van’s driver] to promote driver awareness going forward”. He said he had dismissed the engineer with immediate effect.

In addition, the firm’s drivers are now set to undertake the AA’s Driver Alertness Education course to avoid a repetition of the incident.

Frazer added: “This experience has made me realise that I can do something to help reduce this sort of behaviour on our roads so I have decided to introduce a driver awareness course into our already busy health and safety training matrix for all our employees.”

Writing on Twitter, Sussex Police said the incident has been reported to its anti-social driving team.
