Iveco has supplied three gas-powered vans to provide lower emissions for the UK’s largest waste management company.

The Daily Natural Power vehicles, supplied to Veolia, will carry specialist equipment for removing graffiti, as part of a new contract with the London Borough of Camden.

The vans feature purpose-built spark ignition engines, said to deliver performance comparable to a diesel in terms of power, torque and response, but producing 12% fewer NOx emissions, 76% less particulate matter and up to 95% less CO2 emissions through running on compressed natural gas (CNG).

The 3.0-litre engine delivers 136hp and up to 350Nm of torque between 1,500 and 2,730rpm.

The engine requires no AdBlue, particulate filter or exhaust gas recirculation and needs no after-treatment system maintenance.

Together with fuel costs around 20% lower than diesel, Iveco said this helps to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and boost fleet efficiency.

The vans are also claimed to be 50% quieter than their diesel equivalents.

The Veolia vans, supplied by Dunstable-based Iveco dealer Northern Commercials, will refuel from Veolia’s new CNG refuelling station situated at its Alperton depot, which was built to service all the CNG vehicles in the Camden fleet.

Andrew Hope, fleet development manager at Veolia, said: “Emissions reduction was a critical factor in Veolia’s decision making for this vehicle so the availability of a cost-effective CNG engine made the Daily our first choice when specifying the panel van.
