The UK new LCV market grew by 15.3% year-on-year in May, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

It said the total of 25,359 registrations represented the fifth consecutive month of growth as the market rebounded from supply challenges in 2022, though sales were still 13% below pre-pandemic 2019.

The market-leading 2.5-3.5t van segment grew by 8.3% year-on-year in May to 17,173 registrations, while 2.0-2.5t vans shot up by 57.2% to 4,143.

Vans weighing less than 2.0t however were down by 42.3%, with only 469 registered.

Pick-up trucks were up by 13.3% to 2,959, while 4x4s were up by 698.7% to 615.

Electric LCVs sales were up by 19.8% year-on-year, accounting for 4.1% of the overall market.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: “A van market rebound is an opportunity to deliver an increasingly environmentally sustainable recovery and a boost to the economy. But every lever must be pulled to support the electric switch.

“With the forthcoming ZEV Mandate, we also need a national plan to deliver public charging infrastructure that encourages plug-in van uptake, to give the UK confidence over what can – and must – be a stable, successful transition for businesses up and down the country.”
