Vauxhall targets action on EV infrastructure

A new initiative aimed at boosting EV charger availability in residential areas has been launched by Vauxhall, in partnership with charger operators.
The manufacturer said the launch followed a Freedom of Information request revealing that 71.4% of UK councils have no published strategy for residential on-street charging, and 69% are yet to install any on-street chargers.
It added that based on its findings, 14,188 chargers were planned for installation this year, which it said was well behind the rate needed to meet the UK Government’s target of 300,000 chargers by 2030.
Vauxhall argued that residential charging was not just important for private motorists, with an estimated 40% of company-owned electric vans charged at home by employees, and these drivers also wanting to charge when carrying out jobs in residential areas.
Vauxhall has announced the formation of an Electric Streets of Britain programme, with
s.support from charging firms Char.gy, Connected Kerb, and SureCharge. It says this includes an enablement fund, which will support initiatives to educate councils on how to accelerate charging provision, and the resulting benefits for residents.
The programme also includes a new Electric Streets national database, allowing members of the public to register their residential charging needs online.
Vauxhall managing director James Taylor said: “Accessibility to chargepoints near your home is critical to the transition to electric vehicle ownership in the UK.
“We want to galvanise the needs and interests of everyone, from the public, to the councils and the charging operators to make sure that anyone without a driveway is part of that journey.
“We want to help educate and inform the decision-makers, and enable the installation of more chargers, more quickly.”
