While the timings of low emission zone introductions vary across the UK, they are becoming part of the journey for many businesses. This fact is particularly challenging for fleet and logistics managers operating commercial vehicles.

The immediate question is: How can van drivers enter clean air zones without penalties that could impact on both productivity and the balance sheet?

One answer is rental. Both of low emission hybrids and the new generation of electric vans.

Rental does not involve major capital expenditure – unlike outright purchase or long-term lease agreements. It also gives businesses the option of trying before they buy, finding out how and where electric vans can be utilised without making a costly mistake.

Responding to these challenges, Europcar is not only increasing the share of low and zero emission vehicles as part of its one sustainable fleet programme, with ambitious targets to have green vehicles (sub-50g/km) account for 20% of its car and van fleet by the end of 2024. It is also making a significant investment in vehicle charging at its network around the UK.

Putting electric motoring to the test

Helping fleets prepare for an electric future, Europcar has also launched a demo programme for the Mercedes-Benz eVito Van.

For many organisations there is a nervousness about making a long-term commitment without fully understanding the implications. The Europcar demo programme aims to tackle that anxiety by giving businesses and their drivers the ability to experience everything about zero-emission driving, but without having to make a big financial commitment.

With access to an eVito van for a few days or weeks, businesses can evaluate how and where all-electric commercial vehicles will fit in their fleet operations, without having to commit to a major capital expense. And by testing an electric van in real-world conditions, they can also learn about possible adaptations that may need to be made to their current ways of working.

Try before you buy

Europcar is also giving businesses a longer term try before you buy experience, with access to London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) hybrid electric VN5 vans on long-term rental. Plus, crucially, the VN5 gives a compliant solution eliminating the need to factor in additional costs for entering clean air zones.
