Mitsubishi Fuso looking to introduce panel van

Date: Thursday, April 10, 2008

Mitsubish Fuso's Canter could soon be joined by a semi-forward-control integral van. Senior executives at the company are believed to be assessing the viability of adding a low-cost 2.8-tonner to the line-up with a 5.5 m3 cargo area and a 1,100kg payload capacity.

Marketing it in Britain, however, would lead to a direct clash with Mercedes-Benz's Vito and Sprinter. Daimler, Mercedes-Benz's parent, owns Mitsubishi Fuso and Canter is sold through the Mercedes commercial vehicle network on this side of the Channel.

It's more likely that a Mitsubishi Fuso integral van would be sold in Far Eastern markets as a European-style city centre delivery vehicle. It's worth noting that Mercedes dealers quite happily sell Canter and Atego 7.5-tonners and Canter and Sprinter 3.5 tonne chassis cabs side-by-side in the UK
