Westminster goes electric

Date: Tuesday, August 26, 2008

The first electric Smith Newton 7.5-tonner to be acquired by Westminster TranServ is now in action in London. A joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel Group, Westminster TranServ provides a variety of services to Westminster City Council.
Fitted with a tipper body, the Newton will be used by highway maintenance crews. Power comes courtesy of four 278v sodium nickel chloride batteries and a 120kW electric motor.
