Mr Bean goes under the hammer

Date: Tuesday, January 27, 2009

A pre-war light truck affectionately known as Mr Bean after the character immortalised by Rowan Atkinson is to go under the hammer at a West Country auction in March.

Built in 1930 by long-gone Midland manufacturer Bean, the 30cwt dropside is believed to be one of only three survivors. It started life hauling coal in Stratford-on-Avon and was in the same ownership up until the 1960s. It was subsequently owned by BRS and made numerous TV appearances in historical dramas.

It will be offered at the Dorset Vintage and Classic Auctions spring sale of historic vehicles, motorcycles, automobilia and railwayana. The sale will take place on 26 March at the Gartell Light Railway, Yenston near Templecombe in Somerset. Mr Bean is expected to fetch around £6,000.
