Fuso Canter goes electric

Date: Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Following on from the Mercedes Sprinter E-cell electric vehicle, Daimler has slotted the technology into another of its commercial vehicle products, in the form of the Fuso Canter E-cell.
Described as a one-off vehicle, the battery-powered Canter “represents the next logical step forward by Fuso on the road towards zero-emissions mobility in conurbations and other environmentally sensitive areas”.
The 3.5t gross vehicle weight Canter has its 40kW batteries fitted to the ladder frame to protect them and avoid eating into load space. They offer a range of around 75 miles, aided by a limited top speed of 50mph. The vehicle’s future is currently under discussion.
Fuso is also keen to flag up the Canter Eco Hybrid. There are currently nearly 1000 examples of the diesel-electric Canter being operated across Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland and in the UK, where 10 models have completed around 215,000 miles of testing
