SMMT launches online vehicle recall search tool

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has launched a public-facing web portal to enable motorists to identify if their vehicle is on a recall list.

The Vehicle Safety Recall, search tool is operated using a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and has been designed for prospective owners of used cars and vans to check if the vehicle is subject to a vehicle recall.

The VIN code is a 17-character number, which is found in a car's log book (V5C) and the car itself.

The system has been funded and is maintained by the SMMT, but it is hosted on Motor Codes' website. The SMMT said the service would provide guidance on what to do in the event of an outstanding recall.

"The UK vehicle recall process is one of the most robust in the world, and manufacturers are constantly striving to make it even better. Essential recalls can be missed when a vehicle transfers between owners so this portal provides a fast way of checking any safety issues," said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. "Vehicle manufacturers are committed to delivering the highest standards of safety and record keeping, to ensure the UK's excellent vehicle safety record is maintained."

The service can be found here.
