Record May for van registrations

Date: Monday, June 6, 2016   |

Demand for vans in May was at an all-time high, setting a new record for the month with 28,480 LCVs hitting the roads, the latest Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures have revealed.

This equates to growth of 1.9% compared to May 2015’s figures, while there is a 2.9% year-on-year rise in demand for the first five months of 2016, to 158,402 units registered so far this year.

Vans weighing between 2.5t-3.5t continue to dominate the market so far this year, with a 13.3% increase on 2015, while pick-up registrations are up by 9.6% thanks to a number of recent new vehicle launches.

“Although May was a record breaking month for the UK’s light commercial vehicle market, the pace of growth is easing and is indicative of the performance we anticipate this year following the very high levels of demand seen in 2015,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive. “Providing there are no political or economic shocks to business confidence over the coming months, we expect the LCV sector’s good health to prevail during the remainder of 2016 as consumer appetite for online deliveries continues to grow.”
