Energy supplier SSE has signed a fleet deal to take on 507 Ford Transit Customs.

The first of the new vans have already hit the road with the remaining vehicles to be in service by the end of November.

The vans are fitted with the firm’s 130hp 2.0-litre diesel engine while inside, they have been kitted out with internal storage and racking systems by Qi Van Systems, while Mediafleet have applied the livery.

The vehicles have joined the company’s fleet to support SSE’s nationwide smart meter roll-out programme. Ford claimed the new additions takes its share of the company’s 6,000-strong LCV fleet to 30%.

“We chose the Ford Transit Custom for this role for a number of reasons,” said Gemma Trew, SSE van and truck fleet manager. “It was not simply a question of economics – although the Transit [Custom] does offer excellent whole-life costs – driver comfort and load area convenience were significant factors too. The Transit [Custom]’s load space shape is ideal for the job.”

Stephen Gafson, Ford of Britain direct sales manager, said: “This is a massive order for Ford and one which underlines the competitiveness and desirability of the Transit Custom for major companies seeking a reliable and cost-effective solution.”
