Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new, more powerful engine option for its X-Class pick-up.

The X350d 4MATIC features a V6, 3.0-litre diesel engine producing 258hp and 550Nm of torque, which is capable of taking the X-Class from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, according to the manufacturer.

Mercedes is claiming provisional combined fuel consumption of 31.3mpg, and CO2 emissions of 237g/km.

The new flagship engine introduces permanent, as opposed to selectable four-wheel drive to the X-Class line-up and also comes as standard with seven-speed automatic transmission, featuring steering wheel shift paddles, and start-stop.

Also standard is a switch to choose between five driving modes – comfort, eco, sport, manual and offroad.

Mercedes’ 3.0-litre V6 engine joins the existing 2.3-litre diesel with either 163hp or 190hp, which is derived from the Nissan Navara on which the X-Class is based.

Mercedes said the new engine’s maximum torque figure is available over a wide range of 1400 to 3200rpm, while special features of its design include a single-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, and Nanoslide cylinder lining coating also used in the firm’s Formula 1 engines.

The X350d 4MATIC will be available in Europe from mid-2018. UK prices are yet to be confirmed.
