“The juddering emanates from the clutch,” says a Peugeot spokesman. “A software download has been developed that increases engine torque at low speeds, which should resolve the difficulty.

“If that doesn't work then the dealer will fit a lower ratio reverse gear,” he continues. “As things stand reverse is higher than first on this vehicle.”

Vehicles currently being assembled won't have the fault, he states. Owners of Boxers already in service plagued by it should contact their local dealer, who will sort it out free of charge.

“It seems to be a particular problem with Boxers powered by the 120 HDi diesel although some dealers have reported that it affects 100 HDi models too,” he comments.

Fiat's Ducato and Citroën's Relay share the same fundamental design as Boxer thanks to a long-standing joint venture between Fiat and PSA Peugeot Citroën. Neither Fiat nor Citroën were able to say how they would address the fault at the time of writing.

Ducato differs from the other two models because it is available with a 120hp 2.3-litre MultiJet diesel.
