First Drive: VW Caravelle Business Class

Date: Monday, February 25, 2013

The VW Transporter Business is a bit like a Tardis. Not in the way that vehicles are usually compared to Dr Who’s preferred method of transport, it is not strangely bigger on the inside than on the outside, but because its miraculous interior is concealed by a relatively humdrum exterior.

Press a button on the keyfob to remotely open the sliding side doors and a luxurious passenger environment is revealed. Two pairs of two-tone leather seats face each other with a table with retractable sides in the middle.

The forward-facing pair are electrically adjustable and within easy reach of a chilled box with holders for two bottle sizes while the middle two swivel to face forward if so desired. Strips of lights and climate control switches are mounted on the roof above both seat rows.

A wealth of kit includes wireless internet access, Bluetooth and a three-pronged plug socket so you don’t have to worry about your laptop’s battery giving out.

Front and rear parking sensors come with an excellent reversing camera and the seven-speed auto ‘box is immaculate. Excluding VAT it costs £53,856.
