Van fleets are under pressure to keep costs down in order to win business from online retailers who promise free deliveries to their customers but want to limit the damage to their profit margins caused by having to absorb the expense.

GPS vehicle tracking provider RAM Tracking warned that delivery fleets must reduce operating costs to remain competitive in a market where the vast majority of internet shoppers demand free shipping.

With Christmas approaching, RAM Tracking boss Chris McClellen said: “Delivery fleets must ensure they become the preferred supplier in advance of retail’s busiest period.”

He claimed vehicle tracking could improve route planning, reduce fuel consumption and increase driver productivity.
