Nearly half of the UK’s commercial vehicle drivers have considered quitting their jobs in the past year due to overwhelming stress, dangerous roads, and insufficient employer support, according to Geotab.
The telematics company said a survey of van and lorry drivers had found 46% pondered quitting.
It found 97% said the risk of accidents had increased over the past five years.
Of the drivers surveyed, 88% said work-related stress negatively impacted their driving, while 61% believed it was a factor in increased dangers on the road. However, 53% felt uncomfortable discussing stress or mental health with their employer, and 38% said they received little to no support.
The survey found 67% of drivers would welcome new technology to help improve overall driver performance.
Geotab EMEA senior vice president Edward Kulperger said: “These results are a stark reminder of the pressures faced by commercial drivers, impacting road safety for everyone.
“Drivers face significant work-related stress, observe dangerous behaviours daily, and are often pressured by schedules, yet many feel unsupported or uncomfortable seeking help.
“With nearly half thinking about quitting – and that amidst a driver shortage – it is crucial for employers to provide better mental health support now.”
