UK new LCV registrations fell by 13.3% year-on-year in August, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The data continues the trend of every month so far in 2025 having seen a year-on-year decline.

Registrations in the market-leading 2.5-3.5t van segment fell by 11.5% year-on-year in August, to 10,398, while 2.0-2.5t vans were down by 14%, to 2,383, and vans weighing less than 2.0t were down by 17.6%, to 352.

Pick-up truck registrations fell by 25.8%, to 1,040, and 4x4s were down by 13.9%, to 192.

Fully electric LCV registrations saw extremely strong year-on-year growth in August, up by 109.5% for a 13% market share – although this is still below the level required by the UK Government’s ZEV mandate.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: “August is conventionally a low volume month for the new LCV market so while the continued decline is disappointing, the focus is on September to deliver the fleet investment and growth that would reflect a healthy business environment.

“A thriving market is also essential for decarbonisation, given the vast choice of electric van models already available to suit almost every need.

“Manufacturers need greater volumes to ensure investment in innovation continues unabated.”
