Plumbers tap into Mercedes

Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009

More Mercedes-Benz light commercials have been acquired by plumbing, heating and drainage engineers Metro Mechanical Services. The Erith, Kent-based firm has added two Sprinter 313CDI 3.5-tonners to its all-Mercedes fleet.

One is a Medium length van while the other is a chassis cab fitted with a dropside body sourced from Chelmer Truck Bodies of Chelmsford. Fitted with a containment tank and suction pump, it’s being used to empty grease traps for fast-food outlets; think of that the next time you fancy a burger.

The past few months have seen Metro acquire 17 Sprinters and Vitos, all through Sittingbourne dealer Sparshatts of Kent. It runs a total of 35 Mercedes light commercials from its headquarters on the Europa Trading Estate and they help the company service the needs of businesses nationwide. Grossing at 2.7 tonnes, the Vitos carry general plumbing equipment and tools.

The Sprinters transport up to 1,000kg of specialist drainage equipment, including a high pressure jetting unit, a drain coring machine and a camera-based surveying system. All this cargo is carried for extended periods, so they’re equipped with up-rated springs.

Metro will run its latest acquisitions for three years and they’re set to average 50,000 miles annually apiece. Sparshatts services the fleet out-of-hours to minimise any downtime.
