Mercedes-Benz has announced full details of the new four-wheel drive version of its large Sprinter van.

The Sprinter AWD features a four-wheel drive system, which is engaged hydraulically, allowing the driver to switch between four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive via a dashboard-mounted rocker switch at speeds of up to 6mph if conditions demand.

The system uses full electronic control to manage traction, which according to Mercedes negates the need for a manually engaged differential lock.

In four-wheel drive mode, 35% of the power is sent to the front axle and 65% to the rear axle.

The model comes with selectable low-range transmission - capable of increasing the available torque by around 40% - and downhill speed regulation, along with the Mercedes 4-ETS traction control system with advanced ESP.

The Sprinter AWD also comes with more standard equipment than the two-wheel drive model, with additions including entrance grab handles on both front doors, hydraulic steering, and mixed use mud and slush tyres.

It is available to order now, with production starting in March, priced from £37,540 excluding VAT for a 314 Chassis L2 model.
