A university operating electric commercial vehicles has had safety devices installed to alert pedestrians to their approach.

The University of Birmingham has around 40 electric vehicles among its overall fleet of 100, but wanted to make sure they could be heard by students walking along the paths and roads around the university where the fleet operates.

It has therefore had Brigade Electronics’ Quiet Vehicle Sounder (QVS) installed, which alerts vulnerable road users to the vehicles’ presence.

University operations manager Chris Lane said: “The QVS provides absolute peace of mind to our drivers.

“Driving a quiet vehicle in high foot traffic areas can be very stressful, especially with the sheer number of students we have walking or cycling through our campus.

“The QVS eliminates that worry and ultimately keeps everybody safe. We will be

making sure all new electric vehicles joining our fleet are fitted with a QVS.”
