Ford’s Transit Custom PHEV now comes with the option of geofencing technology, that allows it to automatically switch to electric-only driving when entering an emissions-sensitive location.
Live map data allows the van’s plug-in hybrid powertrain to make the switch whenever entering a pre-defined area, such as a congestion or low emission zone, or alternatively when near places such as playgrounds, schools, or company warehouses.
When the van leaves the controlled zone, it then switches to the most appropriate drive mode for the next leg of the journey.
Encrypted data from the system can be shared with authorities to confirm compliance with emission zone regulations.
Ford says a recent study of central London driving in the Transit Custom PHEV by operators including Addison Lee Group, British Gas, Heathrow Airport, Metropolitan Police and Transport for London found that 75% of mileage was completed in electric-only mode.
The manufacturer says it has so far received more than 500 orders for the model, which is eligible for the government’s plug-in van grant.
