Renault is to broaden its range with the launch of a 4×4 version of its large Master van and the addition of X-Track enhanced traction models across its entire LCV line-up.

The manufacturer claimed the X-Track vans provide superior capability in difficult terrain to the Grip Extend traction technology that has featured on the Kangoo light van since 2013 and the Trafic medium van and Master since 2014.

It said the 4×4 Master was able to tackle more rugged conditions and was suitable for “intensive use on very difficult terrain, including off-road use”.

X-Track vans feature 4×2 transmission in combination with a limited slip differential that is permanently activated, unlike the Grip Extend function that the driver engages by pushing a button on the dashboard at speeds of up to 30mph.

The X-Track models also come with metal underbody protection, sump guard, ground clearance raised by 30mm for the Kangoo and Trafic and 40mm for the Master and all weather tyres.

The 4×4 Master, converted from rear-wheel drive, gets a low gearing system for the most arduous terrain. Front ground clearance is raised by 65mm while rear ground clearance is raised by 58mm on single wheel and by 45mm on twin rear-wheel models. Renault will offer the all-wheel drive system on chassis cabs and both single- and double-cab panel vans.

French firm Poclain Vehicles carries out the X-Track conversions and German bodybuilder Oberaigner Automotive undertakes the work on the 4×4 Master. All derivatives will be available to order from Renault Pro-Plus dealerships under a single invoice.

Renault’s LCV boss Ashwani Gupta admitted the enhanced traction models may not be the most commercially lucrative, in serving a niche segment, but would improve Renault’s offering in the marketplace.

“It’s a high value, low volume technology,” he said.

“Renault is providing what professional customers want.”
