TomTom eyes expansion

Date: Monday, March 14, 2011

Sat Nav giant TomTom is set to take advantage of consolidation in the market by expanding its business.

TomTom aims to grow organically, as smaller players either go to the wall or merge, rather than go for outright purchases because it does not want to have to integrate legacy systems, which have their own platforms, into its own products.

“We will emerge as one of the market leaders, our bread and butter market is LCVs,” said sales director Giles Margerison.

TomTom claimed it was outstripping all its rivals with a growth rate of 40% a year.

The company claimed its HD Traffic system could save 15% on journey times and said it would reveal the next stage of its Eco Plus on-board diagnostic system at the Commercial Vehicle Show. TomTom said the system gives fleet managers real time information about fuel consumption and driver behaviour.

“There’s a need to reward good driving behaviour,” said Margerison, “it’s not trendy to be the fastest but the most efficient.”

He said the system also gives a firm the ability to show a time map to the customer – proving how long it takes to complete journeys.

Margerison said only up to 20% of van fleets are telematics enabled, so there is a “massive target” for growth.

“Fleet telematics pays – there is a return on investment,” he said.
