Deutsche Post DHL is exploring the possibility of introducing its electric vans to the UK.

The letters and parcels giant started making them for its own use five years ago under the StreetScooter banner and now operates a thousand in Germany. It is contemplating supplying them to third parties in both Germany and export markets and was used the Hanover commercial vehicle show to gauge the likely level of interest.

Two models are in production - the Work and the Work L.

The former comes with a payload capability of 710kg, a 4.3m3 load area and a 38kW electric motor. For its stablemate the vital statistics are 1,000kg, 8.0m3 and 45kW respectively.

Claimed range between recharges is approximately 50 miles for both models. Charging times for the lithium-ion batteries are somewhat on the long side compared with what is on offer from other manufacturers these days however, with the Work L taking as much as eight hours to get to 80% of its capacity.

StreetScooter has also produced a concept tipper which the company believes will appeal to local authorities.
