Low tyre pressures costing fleets money, ATS Euromaster warns

Fleets are incurring additional running costs due to drivers running vehicles with underinflated tyres, according to ATS Euromaster.

The SMR firm said 12% of the vehicles it sees through its fleet Mastercare programme feature tyres that are below pressure. It said this would increase running costs by 3-10%, depending on the degree of underinflation.

ATS Euromaster said that with diesel costing an average of 186p per litre, a fleet losing 10% across 100 vans could lose £1300 a month.

ATS Euromaster mobile area operations manager for the North Gordon Robertson said: “That’s a significant loss on fuel. It can also change the driving quality of a vehicle which puts extra driving demands on the driver as well.

“Even if 75% of the fleet is running on correctly inflated tyres, the 25% still represents a worthwhile saving. Can fleets really be ignoring such basic driver checks?”

ATS Euromaster said it inspected 5,800 fleet vehicles a month, and found 32% of vans needed actionable maintenance.

Robertson said: “Mastercare is about managing tyre life and ensuring vehicle downtime is minimised.

“Fleets fulfil their duty of care with regular maintenance and inspection, which means we can offer advice on cost-saving measures to prolong tyre life.”
