Most van drivers risking phone-use penalties, VW research finds

Nine in ten UK van drivers are still physically checking their phones while driving, according to research by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

This is despite laws banning most handheld phone use behind the wheel being introduced in March 2020, with a potential £200 fine and six licence penalty points being issued for convictions.

The research also found half of van drivers were unaware of this law change.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles head of network sales Rob Holdcroft said: “In these dangerous, icy weather conditions, it’s even more important to make sure drivers are fully focused on the road ahead.

“For all those on the road to remain safe – drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike – extra concentration and care is needed.

“Looking at your phone is a distraction that must be avoided, and with in-built hands-free technologies, this is easy to avoid while driving.”
